For our first exercise ‘Vector Wrangle’ we were asked to find a sign that looks as though it could have been cut in a material. From there were photograph it, then use Adobe Illustrate to try to redraw it using as few points as possible.I did a search around and the best ‘cut out’ style sign I found was on the window of a florist in Mount Lawley. Although the lighting wasn’t great at the time of day (leading to a number of bands across the photo) the outline of the cut out was clear and I made a note of which areas were discoloured from the light/reflections.
Following our look at the toilet sign ideograms in this week’s Lecture, we set about creating our own. We began by using graph paper to plan out our designs, which forced us to think about our work within the constraints of a grid (just as designers before us were constrained by the tools of the time). When sketching out the male / female symbols for my sign, I aimed for it to be a relatively abstract sign suitable for western culture; I also aimed to use similar shapes and styles across the two ‘people’ as a means of matching them as a set. I had to try out a few different styles before I found one that conveyed seemed to work well.
This week the lecture opened with an introduction to the differences between pictograms and ideograms. A pictogram being a representation of something in the real world (often with a visual resemblance), while an ideogram is a symbol which has had it’s meaning agreed upon and doesn’t necessarily represent something in the real world. The example given by Stuart was that of the ‘red cross’ and the ‘red crescent’ as ideograms, representing not a literal red object, but rather as agreed upon symbols of the relevant organisations.
While pictograms generally have a real-world basis, they are by no means objective. One way this was demonstrated to use in considering the well-known mapping of the London Underground which was originally designed by Harry Beck. This manner of displaying the train line was considered radical at the time, and disregarded geographical accuracy in favour of visual clarity. Although the pictogram represented the real-world train system, it’s overall style was influenced moreso by the circuitry diagrams familiar to Back and the tools he used at the time (which produced straight lines and 45˚angles).
Cue 2nd Year; Semester 1, and this time round my blog entries are going to be of a more visual nature for the DES2104 unit on Vector Illustrations. These entries are set to focus on the content of the lectures (handy things to remember), relevant readings and/or practise, and any inspiration/ideas/work on assignments.
The first lecture started with the basics, providing a distinction between images and pictures, and explaining how images can be considered to sit on a realism continuum.
“Pictures are to Image what Types is to Words”
It was explained that ‘pictures’ can be considered as that which we view naturally, be it what we see in the visible world or what we see in our imagination and dreams. By comparison, an ‘image’ is an attempt to capture a picture; an representation of what we see in the world or in our minds eye.
Here we are at the end of the road. There’s been a lot of theory and a lot of creating, and now it’s time to wind it up. There’s been a lot of building with blocks, yet Operation Sassafras is not quite as finished as I would like. We (my friend who requested the airship) decided against doing the interior until the holidays and the back balloons still need to be connected, but overall I’m very pleased with how it turned out.
I also found a nifty feature in Minecraft that tells you your stats – how convenient! So, for the course of this project I have spent 2.15 days (in real time) Minecrafting, and the airship consists of over 50,000 blocks. This is not including any time or blocks contributed by Matt in assisting me. There were of course many set backs (wicked problems, weather, lava, fire, explosions and the like) but it was certainly very interesting and a lot of fun.
And now, after much confuzzling, I have finally figured out how to do a video of the airship.
